Road death and injury remains an enormous issue on our roads, Thames Valley Police have joined forces with the 9 highway authorities across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire along with the 3 fire & rescue services, the Highways Agency, Crown Prosecution Service and Her Majesty’s Courts Service to take action.
Through the Safer Roads Partnership, dedicated road safety funding is being used to target roadside enforcement and to educate drivers about the dangers and risks involved with a variety of road traffic offences; whilst also raising other road safety issues to groups who are at the greatest risk.
The Thames Valley was one of the first areas in the country to operate speed and red light cameras and they have been in use for over 15 years. Over that period they have helped to reduce speed and casualties on our roads. The new funding arrangements will now allow more resources to help drive down speed and reduce injuries. In particular our mobile enforcement teams will be targeting casualty hot-spots and high risk routes. Where the cameras have been working in Thames Valley, results from an independent report have shown that the number of people being killed or seriously injured has fallen by 43%.
The Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership has also been leading the way in introducing new training courses for drivers who committ offences, being the first in the country to introduce dedicated training courses for those caught using their mobile phone whilst driving and a specially designed course for new and younger drivers.
